Climate Protection and Climatic Neutrality
As a modern, future-oriented company, we pay great attention to environmental and climate protection. In order to be able to operate in a climate-neutral manner, we decided as early as 2021 to have our greenhouse gas emissions calculated for all our company sites in cooperation with ClimatePartner, our partner for climate protection. On the one hand, the carbon footprint provides us with a tool to reduce our CO2 emissions, and on the other hand, it allows us to compensate for our emissions through certified carbon offset projects. In doing so, we prefer to achieve our climate neutrality through optimization rather than compensation.
“Our cooperation with ClimatePartner has enabled us to identify the major sources of emissions at our sites. As a result, we are in a position to intervene in these areas in order to further minimize our ecological footprint and reduce our emissions.”
Dr. Friedrich Petry, Managing Director of Textilchemie Dr. Petry GmbH
Calculated Corporate Carbon Footprint 2021
ClimatePartner is a solution provider in the field of climate protection for enterprises. The company supported us in calculating our Corporate Carbon Footprint 2021. By analyzing the balanced result, we were able to identify opportunities to further reduce our carbon footprint.
Our Corporate Carbon Footprint 2021 includes all CO2 emissions from our four sites. The largest item is CO2 emissions from the use of gas. This is followed by company cars. Business travel represents only a small share, as this was at a very low level due to the pandemic situation. In addition, we have taken into account our employees’ commutes to work. Including a ten percent safety margin on the overall result, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions to be offset by us is 1107.79 t CO2. This figure does not include the CO2 emissions generated by our suppliers. In terms of sustainability, we motivate them to also become a climate-neutral company.
An emission of 1007,07 tons of carbon dioxide is equivalent to the carbon footprint of 116 Europeans. One single person in Europe generates an average of 8.7 t CO₂1) per year.
Compensation of Our CO2-Emissions Through Carbon Offset Projects
We consequently compensate our emissions. For this purpose, we support international certified carbon offset projects from the ClimatePartner portfolio. Our commitment is transparent and traceable. We give preference to projects from countries with which we have business relationships. In 2021, we invested in a hydropower project in Kuruwita, Sri Lanka, which provides zero-emission electricity for Sri Lanka’s power grid. As of December 2022, we are supporting a forest conservation project on the Matavén river in the tropical rainforest of Colombia, which will protect 1,150,200 hectares of tropical rainforest and preserve its biodiversity. The initiative also focuses on supporting the indigenous population in the areas of education, health and food security. Promoting sustainable economic growth through cooperation with the communities in the Matavén region is also an objective of the forest conservation project.

Good CO2 Emission Factor Due to Green Electricity
In 2021, at our Reutlingen site, we purchased green hydroelectric power from a plant in the Alpine region. For this, we have received a certificate of invalidation from our electricity supply company. The invalidation uniquely assigns the characteristic of the electricity as being produced from renewable energies to us as the end customer. The amount we purchase is invalidated in our name at the German Federal Environment Agency and can therefore not be used again by our electricity provider. This procedure ensures that this electricity cannot be transferred to another customer a second time. The electricity for Textilchemie Dr. Petry GmbH at Reutlingen site will thus be CO2 neutral in 2021. This corresponds to a saving of 144.89 t CO2 when calculated with the national average factor for the electricity mix.
